Motivation Post

Today in humanities class, I saw a post about motivation by guy name Tony who lives in Turkey. The post was about motivation and I think it was really creative. He uses some creative visuals and i was amazed of his blogging style. It's different from others and it was unique and creative. I hate when I'm reading something, there's no visuals or pictures to make me interested or grabs my attention. But he used lots visuals and pictures that makes me interesting. When I'm usually reading something in English, I usually lost my attetion when I don't fully understand what it means or what its trying to say, But somehow I didn't lose my attetion to the post and the post makes me keep reading the post. I think it was becuase of those interesting visuals. Also I think what he wrote was really important. I think he was talking about creativity and motivation(i don't fully understand what he said). So overall, I think it was really creative and interesting.

Motivation Post!

Yesterday in Humanities class, we looked at a post that was written by Tony Gurr, a teacher in Turkey. The post was about motivation and it has a slight twist to it. Instead of a multi-paragraph composition, Tony actually had thoughtful pictures to replace the many paragraphs that bore everyone. I really loved his blogging style and here are some reasons why:

For some people, they like to read just words, but for me, I like having something different to grab my attention after reading many paragraphs. The main reason that I liked Tony`s post so much was because he used images to catch my attention after reading a few sentences. The pictures will always be related to the paragraphs some way or another so if you understand the picture, you will most likely understand the information, I found that the amount of pictures was perfect because he still did explain them in two or three paragraphs, but nothing too overwhelming.

What really drew me in was that the pictures were not just straight forward and to the point, you actually had to think about what it meant for a few minutes to really understand the meaning of the images. This made me think a lot more and got me using my brain because I really wanted to figure out why he had those images there. For example, he had a picture of a slanted L sign that drivers have when they are learning how to drive. Underneath it, he had "This is a LEARNacy ZONE". A person has to be very creative to come up with these types of pictures that have a meaning to them.

I also really loved how he used quotes from other authors or poets that are pretty well known so can all make a connection to them. Here is an example of one of the quotes he quoted: "As Tim Harford once remarked, success always starts with failure as individuals learn from their mistakes and are encouraged to creative something new and different.".

Overall, I think Tony Gurr's post on Motivation is an unique post because I have not seen any other blog posts that use images as the main focus. He had some really important and great points on motivation that we should all follow. His blogging style is something I would definetly see other bloggers trying out because it grabs the readers' attention really easily and it also looks visually appealing so more people will come to read what he has to say. I highly recommend you go check his post out because you will truly be amazed!

LEARNacy Response

Today we looked at a blog post by a man named Tony Gurr. This man lives in Turkey, and has his own blog: AllThe post we read was on motivation and learnacy. I know that learnacy isn't a real word, but Tony makes it sensible.... So you should read the post. For the most part I thought the post was really well done. I really like how he worded it, and some of the things he did was really good. However some things I didn't like. I will now talk about some of these.

One of the things I didn't like was the amount of pictures. I am going to call this the 'Picture Problems'. At first I thought that the pictures were good. These weren't just pictures you read and go 'Oh, I get where he's coming from'. The pictures on his post made you have to think. This enhances the post, but he had a picture more than once every 3 sentences. Some people think this is really good, but I don't like it. With all the pictures that you have to think about it gets annoying. If it takes 5 minutes for someone to figure out what the picture means, then it will take 2 hours for them to finish this post.

The next thing he did was capitalizing parts of words to make it more important. I thought this was really good and made the post better. For example he did many things like LEARNing, and TEACHing. I thought this was a cool way to express important words relating to the post. It also triggers something that makes it more exciting. Lastly it is a good way to show the same part of a word, ex. learn, and show it in many words, ex. LEARNing, LEARNers.

The last thing I want to talk about is the side comments under the pictures. Some of the side comments didn't seem to relate to the post, and what he was talking about. One of them was a picture of Darth Vader holding a lightsaber with the words 'The Principal'. Then his comment underneath was:

Darth…is that a “carrot” or a “stick” in your mechanical hand?
I didn't understand what this had to do with motivation and 'LEARNacy'. Another comment I didn't like was this one:
Go ondisagree with my favourite rahmetli hocam – I dare you!
I thought it was a little bit rude. Some people might honestly disagree with what his 'rahmetli hocam'.

Over all I think Tony had some great points about motivation. I really liked some of his blogging styles like the capitalizing part of words. I thought he had good pictures, just a bit too many making it annoying. I thought that some of Tony's comments were confusing or rude. In the end I encourage you to look at the post and make your own opinion.

My Similie Poem

First thing's first, you don't have to do this...

A cat is like summer
It is playful and warm
A lion is like autumn
Warm colours with a biting cold
A cat is like a tiger
They act fierce and think they rule the world
A lion is like a wolf
They live and hunt in groups

Poetry that Moves!

In Humanities class, we have been studying poetry for the past few weeks. We were told to create a video, or powerpoint on a poem that we could pick. I chose to do a stop motion video of me drawing the images related to the poem on a white board. I had a lot of technical difficulties with this and finally got it to work so I hope you enjoy! My poem is on living life to the fullest!

Poetry That Moves

Definition Poem

_________.Its bright as a star, you cant look at it. If you look at it, your eyes are going to hurt. It changes your mood sometimes, coming back and forth sometimes, and it uses its power so much, its going to hurt you sometimes. It warms you and makes you tear. But without it we cant live. It shines our life and shines our day.

My Definition Poem

An __________
roars like an angry bear;
cracks like thin ice thawing;
when it rumbles; avalanches.
As harmless as a leaf;
as devastating as a tsunami.
When one happens, more may follow.
It growls demanding satisfaction;
demanding disaster.
A way for earth to take back it's resources;
take back what was stolen from the earth.

Definition Poem.

__________

What is _______?
It's like a tissue, wiping away your tears.
It's like the sun warming your soul.
It's a feeling inside that makes you feel like you can do anything.
A twinkling star in a dark night sky.

It's a rising flower in shriveled dirt.
It's a butterfly in a dark wasteland.
It is a twinkling star in a sky of black clouds.
That is _______.

Definition Poem!

A huge rock. Wider on the bottom and gradually gets smaller near the top.
Shooting lava up into the air.
As everyone runs for cover,
Black smoke emerges, giving you a warning before the explosions start.
There are thousands still on this planet, some are underwater, just waiting to burst.
Nothing can stop it from exploding.
The scary thing is, some don't explode for thousands of years and people do not see it as a threat.
What is this ?

What is ____?

It is like a snake, with a beginning, and an end.
It's head is as defenseless as a newborn pup.
It's neck, a flower, delicate, and fragile, but no matter how much you step on it, it still stands.
It's body, a stone, remains the same throughout the years; but when you look closely, it is constantly changing.
It's tail is long, short, large, and small; it is the hardest part to see of them all.
It can go by in a flash; but when it stands still, motionless, it's as if it wasn't there at all.
At times, it's skin is smooth; at times, it's skin is scaly, and gets twisted.
When it smiles, it brings happiness and joy.
But when it cries, it brings suffering and pain.
You may wish for it to flee, but when it's gone, you will weep.

The BC Election

I voted for the liberals in our school election. I liked their campaign promises, and how they would apply to me later in my education. When I did the CBC vote compass the outcome for who's campaign suited me the most was the NDP, however this did not sway my vote towards them. Last time they were in government they gave BC a huge debt. Once elected out it took the liberals another 4 years to finish paying the debt off. I also believe that this would happen again if they were elected into government again. Their campaign promises had a huge total cost, making me believe this can happen again. Also I would like to say that sometimes people start complaining about what the government does. The government tries to do the best they can for the province, and when people complain about what the government did last time they were elected they don't think about the things that they had to fix.

Speaking of people that complain about the government I would like to talk about their right to vote. They can vote, giving them a chance to elect the party to win. So when they complain they shouldn't blame the government, we were the ones that put them in that position. We are the ones who agreed to what they do because they promised to do it. There are also people who don't vote AND complain about the government. I have only one thing to say... You can vote too. Don't complain if you don't even vote. As Canadians we have the right, the privilege and the responsibility to vote for who runs our country, and our provinces.

Lastly I would like to talk about the involvement of media in the elections now a days. This is a very useful way of transferring information, however it is not right for the media to try to sway a vote. They should stay neutral throughout the election. This would give a much more fair vote because people can listen the info about each party and choose for themselves who to vote for. It is unfair for a news reporter to go 'And I am going to vote for________ because they say they are going to do ______, _________ and ___________. Because of this you should vote for them too.'

That's all for now........

Election response!

Some people think that negative ads should be illegal. I don't think they should because if you are running against a strong competition you need to take them down somehow. i also don't think that its right because tour trying to throw your competition under the bus. Lots of parties only talk about the pros but I also think it's a good strategy to compare what you have and they dont. comparing your team to theirs will show you how you have something better than there's. here is an example of comparing
Now here is a example of telling you why you should vote for them
After seeing those you automatically want to vote for them , but which one was more effective? Comparing or listing points?

I believe that during the campaigns media should not be showing "emotion" . By saying that I believe that the media shouldn't pick sides because then the voters might change their decision. Media can change peoples minds fast and effectively that's why reporters should report the facts straight up so voters don't get confused. A reporter could say something that makes the leader sound like they were saying something that they didn't. Reporters a crucial because they can change stories and ruin candidates chances of winning!!

In conclusion, media does play a huge role in elections. In my opinion media should always talk about each campaign equally so voters don't know more about one campaign than the others. In some ways it can be the medias fault for people loosing because if they "hype" up one team and not the others voters can start to fall for those ones.  Media is a big part of campaigns and reporters have to watch how they present themselves.  If the reporter doesn't like one campaign and they show it, for example, talking like they don't care, shows attitude etc. it can ruin the campaign totally. If that same reporter shows that they like this campaign like eg. Sounds happy, shares own opinion, it can help that campaign.
During these election times reporters have to make sure they watch what they do and say because they can be blamed for a party losing!

BC Elections Reflections!

For the past 2 weeks in class, we have been creating our own election debate and ads to help the students in our school decide which party they would like to vote for in the student vote. As you all know, we as students cannot vote until we are 18 years or older. The student vote gives us students a chance to speak our opinion and vote in the BC election. This is a really great opportunity because the student vote teaches us how to vote and also makes us want to vote when we become legal to do so. Students will feel like it is sort of a tradition to vote and therefore, they will vote. This is the next generation we are talking about and the student vote is great to make the students familiar to voting.

We, as Canadian citizens, are so lucky to have the right to vote no matter what race, ethnicity, shape, or size you are. We should not neglect this wonderful opportunity because others who cannot vote, are dying to have a say in what they, as a country do. What I am trying to say is, every Canadian citizen should vote. It is our duty to do so responsibly. Many people take things for granted and do not appreciate the things our government does for all of us. So many people do not vote in elections simply because they are lazy to go through the hassle of trying to figure out which party to vote for. It is actually really simple to find who you want to vote for. Just watch the news every evening and you will find out the pros and cons of every party! Simple as that!

I must say, the whole election project that was going on in our Humanities class really motivated me to want to vote when I am 18! I did lots of research for every party so I basically know a few details here and there about every party. This year, if I were to actually vote in the BC Elections, I would vote for the Liberal Party. Partially because when I was watching the debate on T.V. , Christy Klark answered most of the questions anyone asked her very smoothly and persuasively and that is a very important aspect of debating. I personally did not like how Adrian Dix was dodging a lot of questions and avoiding telling the truth. That tells a lot of the party’s decisions. There were also some negative things that the NDP party had done so that convinced me more to want to vote for the Liberal party.

In conclusion, we should all vote no matter what because we are considered lucky that we even get a chance to vote. It is a duty that you should do as Canadians to be responsible and respectful. I encouraged my parents to vote this year and you should too.

No Red Pill, No Blue Pill - Response

Hi Ms. Pratas,

Let me start off by saying that your article up there is a fabulous piece of work. Anyhow, my name is Kevin from Ms. Lees Humanities 8 Class and I will be responding to your article "No Red Pill, No Blue Pill"

What grabbed my attention right from the start was the title itself, as I read along further into the article I began to notice what you meant. In learning, there are no shortcuts and success is only achieved with hard work and motivation.

I liked how you focused on a poetic theme at both the beginning and the ending. This was another attention-grabber for me and led me wanting to read further. But what really grabbed my attention the most was the quote about the red and blue pills. You can choose to see an illusion of what you believe, but in the end this will end up hurting you.

I agree with the majority of the content in the article as education is something that is constantly changing. Motivation is definitely one of the key components to learning, for example a smart student with a lack of motivation will not perform as well as an average student who is motivated to learn and move forward. If you aren't determined and motivated to learn, quite simply you won't. Teachers want to help you and watch you succeed, but in the end it is up to you to decide what you do.

The article connected to me in many ways, I always hear students saying that they hate school or those students that NEVER do their homework. These students would be doing much better had they motivated themselves to go further or to do their homework.

The article helped me realize that teachers can only do so much - yes, they will guide you in the right direction but it is up to the students to find their interests and motivate themselves.

Regarding the layout of the article, the infographics and pictures enhanced your article; it helped me visualize some of the things you were talking about.

Overall, this was a great article that I made lots of connections to, as you said "Connections do happen" and furthermore motivated me as I considered if I should bother doing my homework and writing this response tonight.

No Red Pill No Blue Pill Response

First ,  I feel like I can relate to what is being said in this post,I  see many people at high school ages that do not have the motivation to learn and that can really be a issue for learning. I myself enjoy reading poems so I liked how you used a poetic form to catch the readers attention. I liked how you used a lot of images and details. I agree with a lot of things that your are stating like about how teachers can also be affected by there class. If you really try to make an effort to participate, it shows everyone that you actually want to learn and that also helps your class and also encourages them.  I always try to come in class with the best attitude because i know that If you just don't try at all, the teacher will eventually give up in trying to teach you. Sometimes it's  really hard for teachers, because they love seeing students strive and succeed in whatever they do but some kids don't and the teachers know they can do much better. Teachers are here to give you encouragement and help point you in the right direction. Motivation is really important especially now because without it nobody would get anything done.

I feel like everybody looses motivation in our generation.I will  admit that I do occasionally loose motivation but then I always find a way to get back up there. When people post things like this it really makes you think about things like.. How motivation is so important. Many people  will also relate to this post because everyone experiences loss motivation.

I see that many of my classmates say that you have too many pictures but I have a different opinions. I think that the pictures make you pay more attention. I also think that the pictures enhance the writing by giving you visuals. I hope that many people read your post and get motivated! Just like I did.

No Red Pill, No Blue Pill Response

I must say, this article can really relate to a lot of students. I know it relates to me. Many times I have found myself bored and not wanting to learn. I am in Ms. Lees hum 8 class, we do this thing called Genius Hour. Genius Hour is when the students create their own projects and present it when finished. This allows students to do and learn what they want to.

I liked how the author wrote the article. The beginning was really good and drew me in to read the rest of the article. One thing I didn't like was the pictures. They were too distracting from the message of the post. I think it would be a lot better if the pictures weren't as big. Another thing I liked a lot was that she put a link on words that were confusing, or people didn't know. This is good because it will allow the audience to connect further, as well as expand their vocabulary.

I think the audience is both students and teachers... The post says in each class there are those who want to learn, as well as those who don't. The audience includes teachers because the article says that if the teacher loses inspiration or motivation then they aren't just stopping those who don't want to learn, but those who want to learn also. This causes those who want to learn to lose motivation, making them less interested in school.

Create your own opinions... Read the authors blog at http://dreamweavelearn.wordpress.com/author/acsaffron/.

No Red Pill No Blue Pill Response

Hello! This is my response to your post, No Red Pill No Blue Pill!

First off, I felt like I could really relate to the message you have given in this post. I have seen many people not have the motivation to learn and that has really been an issue. I liked how you described every little detail and put it in poetic form to make it seem more interesting and to catch the audience's attention. I agree that if students don't make an effort or don't have the motivation to learn, there will be little to no progress. The attitude in the classroom really counts in my eyes. If you really try to make an effort to participate, it shows others that you actually want to learn. I try as much as I can to have a smiling face during class and to always participate whenever chance I get. If you just don't try at all, the teacher will eventually give up trying to teach you. This is really hard for teachers, because they love seeing students strive and succeed in whatever they do. This is what teachers are here for, to give you encouragement and to give you a little push in the right direction. If you don't let the teacher guide you in the right direction, you will be lost for a very long time, until you come to your senses. This is why motivation is so important nowadays.

The message in my opinion was that you should never lose motivation because then no one can help you even if they really wanted to. Motivation is key in a happy, meaningful school life. If you don't have motivation or passion towards something, you will never learn what it has to offer. I believe that everything has a purpose and you need motivation to find that purpose and put it into good use.

There are really big connections to our course because I feel like some people, not just the people in our class, really lack motivation. I always hear them say "I hate school!" and words like that. I have to admit, sometimes, I say those things too but I always find the good in everything and I try to think positively. This post will help us realize that life is too short to waste on not enjoying every second of it. I think a bunch of people will benefit from this post and will also relate to this post. The audience are both students AND teachers. This will help them realize that it's the students who need to fins that motivation and it's the job of the teacher to help them and guide them in the right direction. It's the job of the student to find their interests but to have the teacher show them what each thing has to offer.

I have a different opinion from my classmates. I think the pictures enhance what you are trying to say and it gives the audience a more interesting vibe than opposed to just a regular post. I do agree with them though, to not put to many. Just put a few here and there and not overwhelm your audience.

Thank you !

No Red Pill, No Blue Pill response

Hi, my name is Jaden, and I'm student from Ms. Lees Humanities class and here's my response to your No red pill, No blue pill.
I liked how you use poetic way at the beginning; it made me interesting and grabbed my attention. I think it's really creative and unique way to write an article. While reading your article, I saw lots of pictures that I don't see any point of it and think how these pictures can relate to this article. It was distracting too, but other than that I think it was really creative and unique!

I think I can relate myself into this. By reading this article, I thought of myself a lot, how I have no motivation to learn and how I get bored in the class. I moved to Canada, a year ago and as English isn't my first language, I have to put more works than other students. I started to think about my future if I have no motivation to learn and I learned that I shouldn't lose my motivation, got to put myself into work and stop complaining about my English skills. While reading this I also started to think that it is okay to don't know what the answer is, because I’m still learning and I wasn't born in any English country either. That disappointment that I think of myself is the thing that makes me lose the interest and motivation about learning. I also learned and realized lots of things too. I learned that don't lose your motivation to learn.

Speech-Revised

Driving on your way to an exciting Vancouver Canucks game; who will win, Canucks, or Chicago? As you imagine how the game will play out, you drive over the new 10-lane Port Mann Bridge. What you may not be aware of is, you are being tolled by an electronic system. I, Jarrod Vanthournout, am here today to talk to you about the toll on the new Port Mann Bridge. First off, I will tell you about why they tolled the bridge. I will then talk about the pros and cons about the toll. Last I will tell you about the pricing.

First things first, why did they toll the Port Mann Bridge? If they hadn't I wouldn’t have a speech, would I? Well the thing is the project cost approximately 3 billion dollars! Now that’s a lot of money. They tolled the bridge so they could pay off this project. The question is, was it the right choice?

With the toll there are some good aspects, as well as some bad. Let’s start with the pros. A really good part of the toll is that instead of stopping traffic at a booth the vehicles are in constant movement without needing to stop or slow down. Unfortunately nothing is perfect. One of the problems with the tolling system is that there are flaws; some vehicles have been paid in a different category during different trips over the Port Mann Bridge. Another problem with the bridge is the cost.

Speaking of cost, let’s get to the prices of the toll. The current prices of the toll are following: 1.50 for a car, 75 cents for a motorcycle, 3 dollars for a small truck, and 4.50 for a large truck. I would like to note that these prices for 1-way, not over and back. However this December, toll rates will double, making going over the bridge even more expensive. To keep this discount, you can sign up for Treo. Another way to not need to pay the toll is to take public transit, such as the skytrain, or the bus.

Today I have talked to about the Port Mann Bridge toll. Let’s recap: I have told you about why they tolled the bridge, as well as the pros and cons of them doing so. Also I have spoken about the prices of the toll. I now invite you all to make your own opinions on the toll. Who knows, it might even be when you’re crossing the bridge to a Canucks game.

I haven't timed myself yet, but if it's still over time I could take out the part I coloured red... Any other suggestions are also welcome.

speech draft

Imagine having 8.3 billion dollars in your name?! you can buy almost anything you want with that amount of money! but it’s not money i’m going to talk about today. I’m going to discuss the importance of not giving up on your dreams and goals. but tell you for fun the person who has .3 billion dollars in his names is Steve jobs.He is one person who never gave up and reached his goals. he could have give  up, but he didn’t know what the outcome would be unless he tried. so he tried and tried until he perfected the Apple company, which is now one of the world’s most valuable companies.

Steve Jobs perfected the Ipad, Ipod, Iphone(just to name a few), all by ignoring the negative comments people said about his wild dreams and goals. People thought what he wanted to accomplish was impossible, but he never gave up, and he now called ‘The father of digital revolution’, and ‘Master of innovation’.

Another man who never gave up on his dreams and ignored the obstacles is Thomas Edison. In particular we all know he created the electric light bulb; however, he also created the phonograph and motion picture camera. He too was thought to be crazy in wanting to create such modern devices. But again, he never gave up on his vision and now named the fourth most prolific inventor in history.

Both of these men have left a powerful mark on human history. They taught was not to give up on ourselves, let your imagination run free, and think of ways to make the world better pace. Because of that, they will be remembered forever. So i want to conclude with these.

Be a leader not a follower, and never give up on your dreams, and i will leave you with a quote from Edison- “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is to try just one more time.”

Independent Project Response

I really think that that is an interesting idea. If done it should only be for the older grades, like 11 or 12. This would be so the students in the class would already know all the basics of the subjects to incorporate in their projects. My first thought was it looked a lot like Genius Hour. Even though I said it was interesting I don't like the idea myself.... If there isn't any marks, or grades then how do you pass the course? Can you pass by just presenting even if the project doesn't deserve to pass?
However, there were some aspects I did like... first was the question of the week. I thought it was interesting, and we could incorporate it into the Genius Hour class next year. The second was the check-in at the beginning of the day. I think by doing this the students become closer and more friendly than if they just went off and did their work.
I really don't think this kind of school would work for me!

Independent school response

Independent Project Response was a wonderful opportunity if you don't really do well in academic courses.
The Independent project was actually a good idea It was different to have to grasp the concept of teenagers controlling there schooling. The school really showcased your talents so you can focus on them and you can do things you enjoy so you want to do them. Each week, they had to present their new project that they had been working on to their classmates and then there classmate would critique each other on their projects. Although there aren't any teachers coaching you through every single thing, but there are teachers to help you when you do need it. I think this would be a cool thing to have at our school but not necessarily for younger grades probably 10-12 because they have an idea of what they want to do when there older. I dont think this would work for younger grades because we dont know what we think we want to be so we wont have a goal and us. I personally would not do the independent project right now because I don't feel like I am mature enough to being on my own all semester. I still feel like I would still need a teacher's guidance to help me through. It would be hard to keep yourself on track and actually do the project. Overall I think it would be really cool to try it out one day!

"The Independent Project"

Last week, we watched a video about "The Independent Project" a school designed and implemented entirely by students.

The Independent Project is definitely a unique and original concept - being able to set your own rules, create your own assignments and have no teachers.

The idea appeals to me because of the innovative concept; giving students the opportunity to control and design their own learning. This would be a great way for students who don't do as well in typical academic schools to express themselves and learn in a non-traditional system. Furthermore, what really appeals to me is the free time in the afternoon given to students to work on whatever they want - be it learn to play the piano, conduct science experiments or design the next big thing.

However, I don't know how well the idea would work out in the long run. How would the students function without teachers and rules? Would a system where students could learn freely be the best idea?

But the only way to find out is to try it out yourself.

I personally would not join this program right now, because at my age I perform better in school where there is more structure and rules. However, I think this program would work well for older students who already have a idea of where they want to move forward in their life.

Overall, I think the Independent Project is a great idea - for some people. It is definitely a unique idea for a black and white world.

Independent Project Response!

The Independent project was really interesting to me. It was really different to see students having so much control to what they were to do in school. It really gave students who weren't so good at academic courses, a chance to show that they actually do have some talent. It gives everyone an equal chance to get into the university of their choice. Each week, they had to present their project that they had been working on the whole week to their classmates and then each classmate would critique each other on their projects. The independent project did actually have teachers but the teachers didn't tell them what to do, they were simply there to help the students if they needed help. This idea is very appealing but I think it would work best for the older grades (10-12) because they have a better idea of what they want to do or major in later in life so they can actually create projects within that field. I would not attend the independent project right now because I don't feel like I am mature enough to being on my own all semester. I still feel like I need a teacher's guidance to help me through. But overall, I think it's a wonderful opportunity if you don't really do well in academic courses!

Independent Project Responce

I liked the idea that students design their own class. I also thought that it was something similar to Genius Hour project. It is something different and it was unique idea that students come up with new ideas and projects. It would be awesome if you have your own rules and you can design without teachers. I think this is good way to learn something and try something new. But I don’t think its good idea that they don’t have a teacher. If there is no teacher, if something goes wrong and something happens, they need teacher’s help and they might have done something that teacher doesn’t like.
So overall I think this is great idea that they try something new, but I don’t like this project and don’t think this is great idea in general.

Imagine…a world without electricity, what would you do? I know you guys are thinking so what? i hardly use electricity anyways ,but no electricity means no electronics! GASP that means no tweeting, texting or instagraming. Yes if you didn’t notice by now you do need electricity to power those things. Sometimes we don’t think about what it was like before electricity was invented, what did people do before that?
As the years have progressed we have been even more reliant on electricity. When electricity was first invented was it for the better or for the worst? Hi I’m Jessica and that’s what I’m going to be talking about. So as many people think that electricity is the best thing in the world I have a different opinion. I feel that electricity has taken over the world, for example little kids… teachers and parents feel the need to teach kids on things like I pads, what happened to a simple piece of paper or imagination. Back before electricity little kids learnt to explore the world and would beg to go outside, and if you haven’t noticed when the power goes out were hopeless we don’t know what to do with ourselves. That being said do we rely on electricity too much?! The answer is yes! Close your eyes, imagine waking up at 6;30 and going to bed at 5;30 because after that it’s too dark out, where would your days go1 take note that now electricity has been invented our neighborhoods have expanded from each other , when there was no electricity our communities weren’t communities they were families unlike now where nobody knows each other and now everybody is fighting over wifi. Even though electricity is very convenient and has helped us for centuries is it time to take a break? Yes I challenge you to take a stand and save power, go explore maybe you will be the next Einstein.
* I need to revise it because it talks too much about electronics *

Imagine, waking up and looking out your window, you see planet Earth in the distance. You find your fellow astronauts still sleeping. You put on your Mars suit and take a walk outside. You think "Human colonization on Mars really IS possible. The Mars One organization is a not-for-profit organization that will bring the first human to Mars on 2023. I am going to tell you about the mission, the risks, and what it could lead to in the future.

The training for Mars One will begin this year, Mars One will build a replica of the Mars settlement on Earth, likely in a cold and desolate environment. At January, 2016, a supply mission will be launched, it will land on Mars on October with 2500 kilograms of supplies. In 2018 the first settlement rover will land on Mars, it will begin the construction of the settlement. A video-stream will broadcast to Earth constantly. At 2021 the rest of the supplies for the settlement reach Mars, along with a second rover, which also has a video-stream. At the September of 2022, Mars Team One will begin their one-way journey to Mars. 7 to 8 months later, the first 4 human will land on Mars. Every 2 years, they will launch 4 additional astronauts, steadily increasing the settlements size. The astronauts will conduct a great deal of research, which will advance our technology greatly.

The risks of human space exploration is dangerous at all levels, a small mistake or accident can result in large failure, injury, and death. And the one-way risk means that you will have to stay on Mars for the rest of your life. So you might ask, "Why would anyone want to go to Mars, and say goodbye to their family and friends, knowing that they will never come back?"

                                      Dangers of Fast Food

Two double cheeseburgers, large fries and a large soft drink. That'll be a clogged artery and high cholesterol. Please pull up to the next window. Fast food. These unhealthy foods have made a permanent position in our lives. They're tasty, easy to access, and inexpensive. Fast food is one of the most common dangerous and unhealthy foods because it contains unhealthy ingredients and causes many health concerns.

You are just about to bite into that mouth-watering hamburger. Stop! Do you know what lurks inside of that burger? If you left a hamburger untouched for a couple of years, studies have shown that it will not become mouldy and will stay almost the same! This is because there are tons of preservatives in that burger. The meat is treated with carbon monoxide gas to keep it looking fresh and it comes from cows that have been shot with antibiotics to make it grow faster and bigger. These antibiotics are very harmful to the human body. Also, the cheese in the burger has been processed many times and will not give off any useful nutrients. In a plain hamburger, there are over 50 ingredients!

If you consume too much fast food, you will have a higher risk of getting different illnesses such as obesity.  Obesity is one of the most common results of eating too much junk food. This usually isn't the consumer's fault. I mean, sure, they should hold back on the daily trips to McDonald's but it's the company that keeps coming out with super sized versions of everything. They will keep advertising and pressuring you to upgrade to the larger sizes. This results in more calories, therefore, more weight gain. We also underestimate the amount of calories in fast food so we tend to eat more because we think it will do no harm. Besides obesity, fast food can will raise your blood pressure, which can cause hypertension, which will lead to heart disease and kidney failure. Even gaining 11-18 pounds doubles your risk of getting type 2 diabetes, a serious blood disorder.

You only have one body. Take good care of it. Next time you head out to enjoy a Big Mac, think about how it can affect your body in the long run.

Here is a video about how hamburgers don't mould in 4 years.

Driving on your way to an exciting Vancouver Canucks game; who will win, Canucks, or Chicago? As you imagine how the game will play out, you drive over the new 10-lane Port Mann Bridge, 2,020 metres long, over top of the Fraser River. What you may not be aware of is that as you’re crossing the widest bridge in the world, you are being tolled by an electronic system. I, Jarrod Vanthournout, am here today to talk to you about the toll on the new Port Mann Bridge. First off, I will tell you about why they tolled a bridge that is part of highway 1, the Trans-Canada highway. I will then tell you the pros and cons about the toll. Next I will tell you about the pricing; this is where I will talk to you about the prices of the toll, as well as how you can get a discount. Lastly I share my opinion about the toll on the Port Mann Bridge.

First things first, why did they toll the Port Mann Bridge. If they hadn't I wouldn’t have a speech, would I? Well the thing is the project cost approximately 3 billion dollars! Now that’s a lot of money. They tolled the bridge so they could pay off this project. The question is, was it the right choice?

Now I will talk to about the pros and cons of this tolling system. Let’s start with the pros. A really good part of the toll is that instead of stopping traffic at a booth the vehicles are in constant movement without needing to stop or slow down. They do this by taking a picture of license plates, then billing the owner of it. Also the bridge is always being used; this means that the bridge will be paid off faster than less used bridges.

However this December the toll rates will double, making going over the bridge even more expensive. To keep this discount you can sign up for Treo. Another way to not need to pay the toll is to take public transit, such as the skytrain, or the bus.

So I’ve talked to you about the bridge, but I never told you my thoughts on it. I don’t think the Port Mann Bridge toll is a good thing. It’s on the trans-Canada highway, which is a highway that goes all across Canada. Also some people’s lines of work require them to go over the bridge, and they can’t take public transit because it’s for their job! Imagine a home care nurse going on the bus with her bag of tools. Even though I disagree with the Port Mann Bridge toll, I do support the idea of tolling other bridges. The difference is that the other bridges have other ways, as well as lower prices on the toll itself.

Today I have talked to about the Port Mann Bridge toll. I have told you about why they tolled the bridge, as well as the pros and cons of them doing so. Also I have spoken about the prices of the toll, a way to get a discount, and I’ve even shared my own opinion with you. I now invite you all to make your own opinions on the toll. Who knows, it might even be when you’re crossing the bridge to a Canucks game.

Digital Life Response

After watching this video i realized how technology improved and how we are living within it.For example when i go to restaurant i see many people using their smartphone, even though restaurant is somewhere you talk and eat together. i think we are living with it too much. i see the news article how people uses their smartphone and electronics in the bed. it's one of the problem we have. it definitely affect us.

Video Killed the Radio Star Parody Response

The music video the history teacher made was amazing! First off I want to say that “Digital Life” sounds so much like “video killed the radio star”. Lots of the things said in the video are true, but not all. For example, I don’t have instagram on my iPod, but that doesn’t mean pictures I take on my camera (not my iPod camera) didn’t happen, or things I said didn’t happen. Comparing the 2 videos I see that both of the messages are about how technology is evolving. With “video killed the radio star” it talks about how when video came along the radio became less popular hence ‘video killed the radio star’. I also find this a bit ironic though; Buggle made a video about how video killed the radio star.

With the increase of technology there is lots of controversy about whether or it’s good, or bad. Another controversy is whether or not schools should use more technology in classes. I definitely think that using technology in school is a good thing, but only to an extent. At the end of the video Amber Case said that she thought humans where becoming more like cyborgs. If we stop using books and paper in school the human race will most definitely become 'cyborgs'.

Technology has become a huge part of our lives now. People are always on their phones, or on Facebook. I’ll admit that I also am on an electronic device much of the time, mostly playing games. This I can see is where people think electronics are bad, but there are even more good things about it. For example, the Internet is like a library, but it will always have the book you are looking for. I’ve also taken my love of video games and started making my own; and where did I learn this?  The Internet! With all the information we need to know technology is now a necessity in life, as too many people now rely on it for what they need or want to know. However, even though technology helps us greatly we also need to do other things that do not involve electronics.

Something to talk about!

The digital life video made by the teacher in Hawaii was interesting. The video projected a strong message of how technology has changed over the years and everyone knows its has, for the better or for the worst though!? Although its true that many people use the Internet lots over use it and only rely on the Internet for information, like the quote says "don't always believe everything you see on the Internet". All the kids these days use their phones constantly (even me) and sometimes post things that there are no need of being seen like, posting a picture on Instagram of what they had for breakfast! It's just a habit these days to always text and know what others are doing. I know i wouldn't be able to last three weeks without my phone, i almost think no one can. Almost most schools have iPads and iMacs now, little kids love technology and sometimes I don't think that we should be teaching them things on iPads they should learn on a whiteboard and other resources so they don't only rely on the Internet for everything. It's amazing how the Internet has progressed over the years!

Response to Digital Life Video

The digital life video made by the History teacher in Hawaii was really impressive. The video consists of a message and the message is about how the internet has dramatically changed humans over the course of around 20 years. It explains how all we seem to care about these days is what's going on in the internet world and I absolutely agree with that. Almost everyone I know (including me) is constantly on their phones or computer checking what's going on on Facebook or what's trending on Twitter. I bet these people can't last a month without internet! Just today in Humanities class, Ms. Lees showed us a picture of a grade 1 class drawing a picture to go with the story we wrote for them. I was expecting them to draw on a piece of paper like we did when we were little. Instead, they were drawing on iPads and then I definitely knew that the world has changed into doing everything with technology.
